Towns County is located in the northeastern part of Georgia, located on the northern border with North Carolina. It is a county comprised of two towns, Hiawassee and Young Harris, both of which offer a variety of activities and outdoor attractions. Towns County is nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains and boasts some of the area's most beautiful natural lookouts including Brasstown Bald, the tallest mountain in Georgia. In addition to this, there is the Hiawassee River which flows north into North Carolina, and the splendid Lake Chatuge, an artificial reservoir created by the Chatuge Dam. The lake is now a pleasant escape for watersports and offers more than 132 miles of shoreline (and exclusive real estate).
Young Harris
Young Harris is a beautiful town tucked in Brasstown Valley. It is the second-largest community in Towns County. The town itself was founded around Young Harris College in 1886, which was originally named McTyeire Institute. The local community is rather small, but businesses here are frequented by students and visitors.
Young Harris boasts history, culture, a five-star resort and championship golf course, fine dining and local restaurants, in addition to miles of hiking trails and horseback riding. The most recognized natural attraction here is Brasstown Bald Wilderness Area, the highest view in Georgia. The mountain overlooks Lake Chatuge, another must-see. The area is also home to multiple grand waterfalls including Cupid Falls at Corn Creek Preserves and more.
Hiawassee
The word 'Hiawassee' comes from the Cherokee, and means "meadow." It is an apt name for the small town amidst mountain ranges and cool, buttery lakes. The town hugs the shorelines of Lake Chatuge and is a refuge for those escaping the city. Lake Chatuge is a 7,500-acre man-made reservoir created in 1942 to provide hydroelectric power. Today, the lake is a prime spot for bass fishing and several fishing tournaments are hosted here throughout the year. Keep in mind that fishing licenses are required.
On the north side of Hiawassee are gorgeous mountain ranges in the Nantahala National Forest, and to the south and east are the Chattahoochee National Forest. In addition to all of the natural splendor, you can also enjoy championship golf, hiking, water sports, pickleball, arts, crafts and concerts.
